Wedding Uplighting 201: How Many Do I Need & Where Do They Go?

Welcome to part two of our series!

Last time, we introduced the world of the uplight - a small but mighty fixture that transforms a wedding venue.

We covered the what and why in Uplighting 101, so now let’s dig into the where, when, and how.

How Many Uplights Do I Need?

Imagine uplighting as the fairy godmother's magic wand – a little can go a long way, and the right amount transforms the whole night!

The "perfect" number of lights is like your love story: unique. But hyperbole aside, it depends on three main things:

  1. The size and layout of your venue
  2. The architectural features of the venue
  3. Your budget

We've worked on weddings with as few as 2 fixtures to huge fêtes adorned with 140 fixtures! Based on our years in the Cleveland wedding industry, we can say that many of the most popular venues need a minimum of 24; that is the sweet spot for lighting the perimeter of many a main reception space.

In the end, it's not just about bathing the walls in light. It’s about using light to punctuate and bring out the beauty that's already present in your space and decor.

Where Does the Uplighting Go?

Our lighting designers consider the following factors when deciding the best placement for your wedding uplights:

  1. The sun's schedule – Is your wedding by the light of day or the romance of night? Do the windows in your venue invite the sun to play a role? And what is the time of year (aka when is sunset)?
  2. The canvas – Are your venue walls brick, painted, or draped? Are the ceilings low or high? And is the ceiling light, dark, or textured?
  3. The desired effect – Do you seek a subtle glow, a full wash of color, or a combination of effects that will make your guests say, "Wow!"?
  4. The stars of the show – What elements of your decor should be highlighted?
  5. Your lighting inventory – How many fixtures are we working with to fulfill your vision? This is usually based on the look you’re going for and, of course, your budget.

Every factor above matters to create the mood you desire.

How Do We Point & Direct Uplights?

Angle is everything. The goal? To cast an even, flattering light that accentuates without overpowering. Our lighting team ensures that each beam works in harmony to craft a cohesive look.

Wall Wisdom

The texture and color of your venue's walls play a crucial role in how each hue comes to life.

Red brick will automatically warm up the tone, while painted walls add their own tint to the lighting shades.

And ceilings? They play a big part too. Lower ceilings can catch and reflect the light, adding to the ambiance, while higher ones invite the light to soar, creating a different kind of drama.

Color Concepts

Choosing colors isn't just picking favorites – it's about setting the right mood.

Warm tones can make a large room feel cozy, while cool tones can bring a modern edge or help you lean into a theme like a winter wonderland. And remember, the existing colors in your venue will also factor in, creating a blend unique to your celebration.
